When your child logs in, a single task appears automatically. No menus, no choices. After each session, their dashboard updates with four scores — one for each core skill area. Here's how to read what those numbers are actually telling you.
Reflects how well your child comprehends written passages — finding the main idea, drawing inferences, understanding vocabulary in context, and retaining details. This score rises slowly and steadily with consistent practice.
Measures sentence structure, vocabulary range, punctuation, spelling, and how well your child responds to a prompt. Writing scores reflect the quality of thinking as much as grammar — both matter.
Covers two things: mental math speed and accuracy (the automatic recall that makes everything else easier) and real-world problem solving (reading a situation and applying the right operation). Both build true number sense.
Tracks logic, pattern recognition, cause and effect, and multi-step reasoning. This isn't a science score — it measures the mental habits that make every other subject easier. Students who improve here tend to improve everywhere.
The focus score is separate from academic performance. It measures engagement during a session — whether your child is working steadily or getting distracted. A child can have a perfect focus score and still struggle with a concept. They can also be advancing academically while showing low focus. Always look at both together.
What a healthy focus score looks like
Scores above 75 indicate a child who is genuinely working through their session. Scores that consistently fall below 50 — especially combined with slow academic progress — often signal that sessions are being rushed through, left incomplete, or done while distracted. This is worth a conversation. It rarely means something is wrong with the child. It usually means sessions need a quieter environment or more structure.
Progress slowing down is not a problem — it's information. Every child hits a level where they've reached the edge of their current knowledge. This is where Outstanda becomes most valuable, because it shows you exactly which domain is stalling. Here's the difference between normal slowdown and a child who needs intervention:
The right response is always the same: Sit with your child during their next session in that subject. Watch exactly where they pause, guess, or give up. That moment tells you more than any score report. Then practice that specific thing — not the whole subject — between sessions. The strategies in each grade band below will show you exactly how.
If you have a group account, you can see domain averages across all students. When two or more students are significantly below the class average in the same domain, that gap is almost never random — it usually points to a concept that wasn't solidified at an earlier grade level.
What to do: Pull those students into a small group during your next Outstanda session. Don't interrupt their assigned activity — watch them work it. The specific task they're failing tells you the exact concept to address in your direct instruction time. Five minutes of targeted review before the next session can break a weeks-long plateau.
If an entire class is below 3.0 in Thinking by mid-year, prioritize logic activities in your independent work time. These skills are rarely taught explicitly and respond quickly to direct exposure.

Kindergarten is about one thing: getting comfortable with language and numbers in their most basic forms. Everything that follows in every grade — every reading passage, every word problem, every writing assignment — rests on what gets built here.
A note about kindergartners who aren't reading yet
If your child is not yet reading independently, don't worry about progression scores right now. The most important thing you can do is keep working on phonics — letter sounds, blending, and sight words. Read to them every single day. Outstanda will meet them where they are, but a strong phonics foundation makes everything else faster.
Kindergartners are learning that written words carry meaning. The core skills are recognizing letters and their sounds, connecting spoken words to written ones, and beginning to understand simple sentences.
If stuck: The gap is almost always phonics. Focus on one letter sound at a time, daily. Alphabet songs, foam letters in the bath, and tracing letters while saying the sound out loud all work.
At this stage, writing means forming letters correctly, beginning to write their own name, and eventually producing a simple sentence with a capital letter and a period.
If stuck: Fine motor skills matter here. Practice with crayons, play dough, tracing, and dot-to-dot activities builds the hand control that makes writing easier.
Counting to 20 reliably, understanding that numbers represent quantities, and beginning to add and subtract small numbers with objects. Number sense — the gut feeling for how numbers relate — starts here.
If stuck: Use physical objects. Count everything. Steps on the stairs. Grapes on the plate. Fingers. The brain connects numbers to reality through hands-on experience first.
Pattern recognition, simple sorting, and beginning to answer "why" questions about stories or pictures. This is where curiosity gets structured into reasoning.
If stuck: Play games that involve sequences and patterns — block stacking by color, simple puzzles, sorting toys by shape. Ask "what comes next?" constantly.
Kindergartners are the most variable group. A child who looks completely lost in September can leap two levels by November — development at this age is nonlinear. Don't over-intervene early.
Phonemic awareness is the hidden bottleneck. A child who cannot isolate individual sounds in spoken words (clap-ping → "clap" and "ping") will struggle to decode written words no matter how much they practice. If a student is stuck in reading for more than three weeks, assess phonemic awareness directly before assuming it's a reading problem.
For students who are clearly pre-readers, Outstanda's listening and oral comprehension tasks are still valuable — they build vocabulary and sentence pattern recognition that pays off when reading clicks.
If you have two or more students significantly below their peers in early math, check counting accuracy first — not addition. A child who can't count reliably to 20 cannot meaningfully add or subtract yet.

First and second grade are where the gears shift. Children move from sounding out individual words to understanding what those words mean together. This transition is one of the most important in a student's academic life — and it's where gaps first become visible.
Reading simple sentences and short paragraphs, understanding the main idea of a short story, and beginning to answer basic comprehension questions. Fluency — reading smoothly without stopping at every word — is developing.
If stuck: The gap is usually fluency. A child who reads haltingly is spending all their mental energy decoding words, leaving nothing for comprehension. Read the same short book together three nights in a row — fluency builds through repetition with familiar text.
Writing two to four complete sentences on a topic, using capital letters at the start of sentences, basic punctuation, and mostly correct spelling of common words. The goal is communicating a simple idea clearly.
If stuck: The bottleneck is usually either spelling anxiety (they won't write words they're unsure of) or sentence structure (writing in fragments). Solve spelling anxiety by writing in pencil and praising effort over accuracy. Solve fragments by reading what they wrote aloud — children can often hear when something is incomplete.
Adding and subtracting numbers up to 20 confidently, understanding place value (tens and ones), beginning multiplication concepts through grouping, and solving simple word problems with one operation.
If stuck: Speed math frustration is common here — and it's worth explaining to your child that struggling with speed drills is completely normal. The goal of timed practice is to build automatic recall over time, like a musician practicing scales. They won't feel fast until they've practiced many times.
Following multi-step directions, identifying cause and effect in simple stories, and beginning to solve simple logic puzzles. The logic and engineering-style activities at this level introduce the idea that problems have multiple solutions.
If stuck: Children who struggle here often rush. The most effective intervention is slowing down — read the problem twice, out loud, before trying anything. Teach them to say "I don't understand this yet" instead of guessing immediately. Patience with confusion is itself a thinking skill.
At this level, reading and writing scores on the dashboard are closely linked — and weaknesses in one almost always affect the other. A child who struggles to write sentences often struggles to comprehend them when reading, and vice versa. When you see one score lagging significantly behind the other, look at both in your intervention planning.
For reading plateaus: Check fluency before comprehension. A child who reads at 40 words per minute cannot be expected to comprehend at the same level as a child reading at 80. Use Outstanda's Close Reading tasks as a diagnostic — if they comprehend well when you read aloud but fail when reading independently, fluency is the target.
For math plateaus: Automaticity with addition facts (sums to 20) is the gating skill for everything that follows. If a student is spending more than 3 seconds on basic addition recall, that's where intervention should focus — not on the harder concepts they're failing. The harder concepts are failing because of this gap. Speed Math sessions build this automatically over time, but direct daily practice accelerates it significantly.
If two or more students in your group are stuck: Consider a 5-minute "warm-up" of oral math facts or read-aloud before independent Outstanda time. Group plateaus almost always point to a shared gap from earlier instruction.

Third and fourth grade are when foundational skills need to become reliable. Students are now expected to read longer texts, write multi-sentence paragraphs, handle multiplication and division, and apply logic to real problems. Gaps that weren't visible before often surface now — because the work got harder.
A common pattern at this level: A child who seemed fine in second grade suddenly struggles in third. This is almost never a new problem — it's an existing gap that didn't matter until the work required it. Finding it now and addressing it directly is far better than waiting.
Reading longer passages (multiple paragraphs), identifying the main idea vs. supporting details, making inferences, and understanding vocabulary from context. Close Reading tasks at this level require students to hold information across an entire passage — not just recall the last sentence.
If stuck: The gap is almost always inferencing — the ability to understand what a text implies but doesn't say directly. Children who struggle here often look for one "right" sentence to answer comprehension questions instead of synthesizing what they've read.
Writing a clear paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting details, and a conclusion. Using varied sentence structure, mostly correct punctuation, and beginning to choose words deliberately rather than using the first word that comes to mind.
If stuck: Most 3rd–4th grade writing struggles come down to organization, not ideas. The child has things to say — they just don't know what order to say them in. Teach the simplest possible structure: "Say what you're going to say. Say it. Say you said it." One paragraph.
Multiplication and division fluency, multi-digit addition and subtraction, introduction to fractions, and multi-step word problems. Speed Math at this level is genuinely hard — multiplication tables through 12 must become automatic for upper-grade math to make sense.
If stuck: Multiplication tables are the bottleneck for most students at this level. There is no shortcut — they need repetition until recall is automatic. But repetition does not have to be drills. Use songs, rhythm, games.
Multi-step logic problems, applying a rule to a new situation, and beginning to work through engineering-style challenges where there is no single "right" path. Facts in Action tasks require connecting information from multiple sources to reach a conclusion.
If stuck: Students who struggle here often struggle with the feeling of not knowing the answer immediately. They need to practice staying with a problem. The Logic Experience tasks are intentionally open-ended — if a child is frustrated, remind them that being stuck is the actual practice.
At grades 3–4, the Math score is the most predictive of future academic difficulty. A student who has not achieved automaticity with multiplication and division facts by the end of 4th grade will struggle in every math-adjacent subject through high school — not because they aren't smart, but because working memory has to carry too much load.
Speed Math sessions are cumulative: Students who appear stuck in Speed Math for several weeks are still building the neural pathways that produce automaticity. This is not failure — it's the process. However, if a student is consistently not improving after 4–5 weeks, check whether they understand what multiplication actually means (groups of), not just the procedure. Conceptual confusion stalls procedural memorization.
For writing plateaus: The single most effective classroom intervention at this level is structured paragraph modeling — writing one paragraph together as a group, with the teacher thinking aloud about each decision. Students who cannot write a paragraph almost always have never seen the thinking process behind one made explicit.
If two or more students are below 3.0 in Thinking by mid 4th grade: This is a serious flag. Thinking skills at this level predict performance in science, social studies, and advanced math. These students need explicit instruction in how to break a problem into steps — not more content, but more process modeling.

Fifth and sixth grade are a pivotal transition. Students are now expected to read for information across multiple sources, write structured arguments, handle fractions and pre-algebraic thinking, and solve problems that require combining multiple skills. Fundamentals aren't "basic" anymore — they're the engine for complex work.
Close Reading passages are longer and denser at this level. Students must track details across an entire piece, distinguish fact from opinion, understand how an author's purpose shapes content, and answer questions requiring them to synthesize information — not just recall it.
If stuck: Attention to detail is usually the gap. A student who reads quickly but can't recall specific facts after reading is skimming — their brain is pattern-matching rather than processing. Slow down before speeding up.
Multi-paragraph writing with a clear structure, a defensible point of view, and evidence to support it. Sentence variety, deliberate word choice, and consistent punctuation are all expected. Writing Accuracy at this level tests whether students can listen carefully and reproduce complex sentences correctly — a skill tied directly to attention and working memory.
If stuck: Most writing struggles at 5th–6th grade are structural — the student has good ideas but poor organization. Or they have good sentences but nothing connecting them. Teach transitions explicitly: "first," "this matters because," "on the other hand."
Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and the beginning of algebraic thinking. Math in Action word problems at this level require selecting the right operation, setting up the problem correctly, and checking whether the answer makes sense. Speed Math now includes mixed operations and more complex mental math.
If stuck: Fraction confusion is the most common plateau at this level and almost always traces back to not understanding what a fraction actually represents (part of a whole, part of a group, or a division expression). Before practicing procedures, restore the concept.
Multi-variable logic problems, applying principles to novel situations, and building and testing solutions to engineering-style challenges. Facts in Action tasks now require evaluating competing explanations and choosing the most supported one — a skill that transfers directly to science, history, and debate.
If stuck: Students at this level who struggle with Thinking tasks often have the intellectual capacity but lack a problem-solving process. They need a framework: read → identify what's known → identify what's unknown → try something → evaluate → adjust.
By 5th and 6th grade, reading and writing skills are no longer "language arts problems" — they are content-area problems. A student who cannot read a dense paragraph closely will struggle in science, social studies, and eventually in math word problems. When you see a student's Reading score stall, look at their performance across all subjects, not just ELA.
Vocabulary is the silent driver. Word Mastery sessions build academic vocabulary — the tier-2 and tier-3 words (analyze, formulate, contrast, sequence) that appear in test questions and content-area texts but rarely in conversation. A student who doesn't know what "contrast" means cannot answer a question that uses it, regardless of content knowledge. If you notice a student who seems to understand content but consistently fails comprehension questions, test for vocabulary gaps specifically.
For thinking score plateaus: Students at this level who are stuck in Thinking often have high compliance but low metacognition — they complete tasks without understanding their own reasoning. Ask them to explain their solution process, not just their answer. The explanation is where the gap reveals itself.
Writing Accuracy as a diagnostic: Low scores on dictation-style tasks often indicate auditory processing or working memory challenges, not writing ability. If a student writes well independently but fails Writing Accuracy, this is worth flagging for a specialist review.
If a group of students is stuck in Math: The most common shared gap at 5th–6th grade is fraction sense. Run a quick informal assessment: "is 3/8 closer to 0, 1/2, or 1?" Students who can't answer this intuitively will struggle with everything that follows. This is a conceptual fix, not a procedural one.

Seventh and eighth grade are the last real opportunity to close gaps before the academic demands of high school arrive. The fundamentals don't get easier — they get required. A student who enters 9th grade with weak reading comprehension, inconsistent writing, or shaky math foundations will face compounding difficulty in every subject. The good news: intentional, consistent practice at this level still makes an enormous difference.
This level is about depth, not speed
At 7th and 8th grade, the goal shifts from building skills to deepening them. A student who can read a passage but can't evaluate the author's argument, or who can solve a math problem but can't explain why it works — that's the gap to close now. Outstanda tasks at this level are designed to push beyond surface-level competency.
Reading complex, multi-paragraph texts on substantive topics and answering questions that require evaluation, not just recall. Students need to distinguish an author's claim from their evidence, identify bias, and synthesize information across an entire piece. Close Reading at this level mirrors the demands of high school and standardized testing.
If stuck: Critical reading — evaluating what a text is arguing, not just what it says — is the gap for most students at this level. They've been trained to find the right answer in the passage. They haven't been trained to question the passage itself.
Structured multi-paragraph arguments with a clear thesis, supporting evidence, counterargument acknowledgment, and a conclusion. Word choice should be deliberate — strong verbs, specific nouns, appropriate academic vocabulary. Writing Accuracy sessions at this level involve complex sentence structures and test careful listening and precision.
If stuck: Thesis weakness is the most common issue — students write around a topic instead of making an argument about it. "My essay is about climate change" is not a thesis. "Human activity is the primary driver of recent climate change because..." is.
Algebraic thinking, negative numbers, proportional relationships, geometry concepts, and complex multi-step word problems. Speed Math at this level challenges students on mixed operations, order of operations, and mental estimation. Math in Action problems require careful reading and multi-step planning.
If stuck: Algebra readiness is the checkpoint. Students who struggle at this level often have a hidden gap in one of three places: fraction operations, negative numbers, or the concept of a variable. Identifying which one — not all three — is the efficient path forward.
Complex multi-step logic, evaluating solutions against multiple criteria, and reasoning through scenarios where there is no single right answer. Logic Experience tasks at this level are genuinely challenging — they require patience, systematic thinking, and the ability to hold multiple variables in mind simultaneously. Facts in Action requires the kind of structured analysis used in science experiments and historical argument.
If stuck: Students who plateau in Thinking at this level often have strong knowledge but weak process. They know a lot of facts but can't organize them into a coherent argument or solution. The fix is always the same: slow down, make the process explicit, and practice explaining reasoning before presenting conclusions.
Eighth grade is widely documented as the most consequential year for identifying and addressing academic gaps before the compounding demands of high school make them much harder to close. A student who enters 9th grade reading two years below level faces difficulty in every subject — not just English. A student with weak algebraic foundations will hit a wall in both Algebra 1 and in any science course that requires formula manipulation.
Use the domain scores diagnostically, not just motivationally. A student at 4.0 in Reading and 5.5 in Math by mid-8th grade has a clear profile: focus reading intervention, continue math development. Treating every domain equally when gaps exist is inefficient use of limited instructional time.
Writing scores at this level are predictive of college readiness. The writing tasks in Outstanda at 7th–8th are structured to mirror what high school English courses require. A student who consistently fails to advance in Writing — not for lack of effort, but for organizational and structural reasons — benefits from explicit instruction in essay structure, not more writing practice. More practice without instruction reinforces poor habits.
For thinking score plateaus at this level: The most effective classroom intervention is Socratic discussion — asking students to defend positions, identify assumptions, and consider alternative explanations for the same evidence. This cannot be replicated by individual practice tools alone. Outstanda builds the foundation; your direct instruction activates it.
Standardized test alignment: The Reading and Thinking domains at grades 7–8 directly mirror the skills tested on state assessments, the PSAT, and eventually the SAT. Students who show consistent growth in these domains on Outstanda — regardless of their current level — are building the skills that those tests measure. These are not test-taking tricks — they are the fundamentals your child builds every session.
A student who reads carefully and quickly has a structural advantage on every timed test, in every subject. A student with automatic math recall spends less working memory on computation and more on reasoning. A student who writes clearly earns partial credit even when they don't know the full answer. These skills compound.
Fundamentals work like compound interest. A child who adds one level to their reading score this month reads slightly better next month, which means they encounter and absorb slightly more vocabulary, which makes them slightly better at comprehension, which makes them better at writing, which makes them better at thinking clearly. The gains build on each other invisibly until they're suddenly obvious.
Three 15-minute sessions per week over a school year outperforms two-hour cramming sessions before a test by every available measure. The brain consolidates skills during sleep and between sessions — not during them. Regular practice is not about drilling. It's about giving the brain enough repetitions over enough time to make skills permanent.
